St. Mary's Episcopal Church
-
Description
-
This videocassette features a guided tour of the historical St. Mary's Episcopal Church located in downtown Kansas City. The tour includes baptismal fonts, bell, painted and stained glass windows, marble altars, prayer desk from older church at 8th & Walnut streets, screen, vestments, statues, chairs, lamps, Bishop's chair, and portraits of priests. "Most of the ornamental windows are painted art glass rather than stained glass. The original windows were created by Thomas Pain, who was a parishoner of St. Mary's until his death in the 1930s. The 32-foot high altar on the east wall is built from marble colored through the 'endolithic process' which uses heat and pressure to infuse ink into the marble."The church was designed by William Halsey Wood and built by Remick and Stone. Construction, which began in 1886, cost $75,000. It was completed in 1888 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The earlier church began in 1857 as St. Luke's Church.
