The Kansas City El Road

Paper by Calvin Manon about the history of the elevated street railway road, partly constituted of a tunnel running underground through the bluff at 8th Street. Information also about other streetcars, including 40 acquired from the 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair, the city's most ornate, durable, and smooth-riding until 1941. Excerpt from page 3: "The engines carried a dummy street car body, a camouflage which was supposed to prevent horses from becoming frightened along the routes where the trains ran on streets. Presumably this was supposed to keep the horses from seeing the smoke or hearing the snorting of the engine. The tiny, eight wheeled locomotives burned coke instead of coal. This was an effort to hold down the volume of smoke and cinders, the major objection to the use of steam engines for city transportation."

Folder has 61 pages which contain 21 United States Patent Office applications from Kansas City Fire Chief George Hale. These patents are dated between 1880 and 1899. Most all have to do with fire department equipment and include his famous water tower invention. Most just have the first page of the patent and corresponding sketch. These copies have been arranged in date order which also corresponds to patent number order. These patents include fire department equipment, alarms, horse equipment, as well as a fender for street cars.

A 33 page typewritten manuscript with four additional pages at the end. Gives the history of the List & Clark Construction Company which was started in 1928. They were involved with railroads, highways, dams, dredging and mine work. Co-founder William Mark List was born September 25, 1876 and co-founder Charles Edward Clark was born November 10, 1878. Includes numerous photographs of the company and individuals as well as construction work in progress.

Conductor's Timebook of Jacob Brinkerhoff

Title continues as "Kansas Pacific Railroad, October-November 1871, Wyandotte/Armstrong to Brookville." A 45-page, spiral-bound work which includes photo and biographical information on Jacob Oscar Brinkerhoff, a brief history of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, a map, equipment notes, summary of trips, photocopies of the time book, etc. Brinkerhoff was Passenger Conductor on the Kaw Valley Division which was from Wyandotte to Brookville, a distance of about 200 miles. Brinkerhoff died on May 22, 1914, at the age of 75. He was in his 49th year of railroad service.

Includes mention of Guadalupe Center, Holy Rosary Center, St. Francis Health Center, etc. The Agnes Ward Amberg Club of Kansas City was named after Mrs. Amberg who developed volunteer service among the Italians of Chicago. The constitution stated its object "shall be to acquire a broader knowledge of Catholic Social Problems, and to work toward their solution."
