An article discussing pencil sketches by Thomas Hart Benton that are up for auction by Dirk Soulis Auctions in Lone Jack, Missouri. Items to be auctioned are a dozen previously unknown preliminary sketches of the mural "Achelous and Hercules" that used to be displayed in the Harzfeld's department store from 1949 until the store closed in 1984. It is now displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

Big Plans for Historic Pickwick

Article reports on a plan to to renovate the historic Pickwick hotel and bus terminal complex located between 9th and 10th streets on McGee. Overland Park developer Tom Smith wants to redevelop the complex as apartments and plans to begin construction in the spring of 2014. The Pickwick Hotel was built in the 1930s by the architectural firm of Wight & Wight. The building was converted into a housing development in the 1970s and closed in 2009.

Tax Credits Help Revamp Regis Hotel

Downtown Project Gets a New Deadline

The building that once housed the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, located at 925 Grand Boulevard, is part of a redevelopment plan by Jason Townsend. Townsend purchased the 90-year old building in 2005 and proposed converting it into residential condominiums. An extension was granted on his $45 million redevelopment proposal giving him a deadline of January 2014 to complete the work.

A Bright Edge for River Market

A $3.5 million reconstruction project has been developed for Second Street in the River Market district. The major portion of the project will turn a dirt road into a landscaped pedestrian thoroughfare. Work to begin at the end of September. Many other reconstruction projects will begin throughout the fall along Second Street. From 2000 to 2006 the building housed Club Chemical, "a nightclub with such a nasty reputation that Kansas City police weren't allowed to work there off-duty as security guards."

Movies Are Returning to Main Street

The AMC Mainstreet Theater is set for its grand reopening on May 1 after the company worked with Cordish Company, the developer for the Kansas City Power and Light District. The theater features a six-screen complex, a restaurant/lounge called the Marquee, digital posters and a flavor wall. The Mainstreet Theater originally opened in 1921 and became the RKO Missouri in 1949. Finally in 1960 it became the Empire Theater and eventually closed in 1985.

A Home for Artists Planned Downtown

Article reports on a proposal from a Minneapolis developer, Sherman Associates, to renovate the historic Scarritt Building (818 Grand Blvd) into an afforable living and work space for local artists. The plans calls for the 11-story building to be renovated into 40 studio apartments and 69 single bedroom units. A follow-up phase includes the redevelopment of the neighboring Scarritt Arcade at 819 Walnut St.
