He was born in Cooper County, Missouri, in 1844, and came to Kansas City in 1868 "as assistant editor of the 'Kansas City Commercial Advertiser,' a Democratic daily paper," going on to work as a journalist at the Kansas City Times, the Kansas City Evening News, and the Kansas City Evening Mail, before entering the grocery and grain business in the 1870s, "under the firm name of French Brothers" in 1876 and after 1886 called the French Commission Company.
