The Art Research Center, an arts group dating to 1766, made the corner space at 922 East 48th Street its headquarters in 1973. The block is part of a large area, bound roughly by 47th Street, Brush Creek, Rockhill Road, and Troost Avenue, that was demolished and redeveloped into the Kauffman Foundation, its Kauffman Legacy Park, and the Anita Gorman Conservation Center.

The Plaza Bowl bowling alley, at the left edge of the image, opened in 1940 and closed in 1978. The buildings were partially demolished for the construction of a Saks department store, which opened in 1982.

Photograph of 3401 Main Street, a former rowhouse residence converted into office space, formerly known as the Rat Castle Apartments, in the early 1980s. This building was constructed in 1888, prior to the area's annexation by Kansas City, and continues around the corner to an series of rowhouses at 1-7 East 34th Street. The building underwent a major renovation and rehabilitation in 1982-1983. A strip of vacant storefronts at 3403 Main Street is also pictured. The majority of buildings on the block were razed in the 1980s and 1990s for additional parking lots and to expand the Foreign Language Academy's campus.

Photograph of the 39th Street facing side of the Hyde Park Building, at 2-8 East 39th, circa 1980. The building opened in 1916, and at the time of this photo, the ground floor was occupied by the Adult Literary Guild adult bookstore, which was evicted in 1982 as part of a neighborhood redevelopment effort lead by J. Nelson Happy. The New Earth bookstore, a feminist store and event space, can be seen in the background of the image, on the northwest corner of 39th and Main.
