The bank originally opened in this location in 1906, and in 1978, the building underwent a $300,000 renovation aimed at creating a contemporary version of the building's original facade. The building was torn down in July 2018 for a mixed-use development project.

The First National Bank of Kansas City was started in 1886 by James Lewis Lombard and Colonel James L. Abernathy, and served Kansas City for over 100 years. This collection, donated by a former president of Bank of America’s Kansas City region, consists of business records of a long-standing Kansas City banking institution, as well as building records of the former First National Bank and current Kansas City Public Library Central Branch.

The First National Bank of Kansas City was started in 1886 by James Lewis Lombard and Colonel James L. Abernathy, and served Kansas City for over 100 years. The First National Safe Deposit Company was a subsidiary of the bank that offered safe deposit boxes for customer use. This collection contains items found in the former First National Bank and current Kansas City Public Library Central Branch building by library staff, as well as additional miscellaneous bank materials donated to the library.
