J. Bird Studios, at 516 Kansas Avenue, opened September 2006. Tile-maker Jori Herbert established the six-artist studio in Armourdale because of its affordability and proximity to West Bottoms and Crossroads. Other artists are Brooke Guardado, Lisa Lovine, Erika Hamlett, Cara Long, and Mo Weberg.

Article describes the history of and current state of the historic Strand theatre, located near 35th Street and Troost. References are made to the Strand theatre as a mainstream motion picture theater from its opening in 1916 through the 1950s. Jerry Medlin, co-owner of the Strand during the 1970s is interviewed and provides details regarding its operations as an adult cinema. The Strand's current owner, Dick Snow, is interviewed and describes the the theater's current state as well as his concern for the future of the business. Jori Sackin, a local artist, is interviewed and describes his vision of the Strand being developed into an urban arts center. References to several Kansas City adult cinemas are made.
