Born in Ohio in 1825 and moving to Independence, Missouri in 1858 before working with "the Wyandotte, Kansas City and Northwestern Railway" to "penetrate the vast coal fields of Lafayette county, and to promote manufactures in Kansas City by bringing cheap fuel to its doors."
