He was born in Indiana in 1856 and became a railroad conductor from 1884 to 1894 "on the Wabash road, between St. Louis and Kansas City," meeting again in Kansas City in the 1900 Republican National Convention at Convention Hall as nominee for governor, while based in Saint Louis.

Born in Indiana in 1852 and coming to Kansas City about 1880 as a grocer before becoming president of "Mechanics' Savings Bank" in 1890 and then president of the City National Bank in 1900, as well as organizing the Missouri Gas Company (later changed to the Kansas City, Missouri Gas Company), with residence on Independence Boulevard.

Description of his later career in Saint Joseph, building a hotel on the site of Joseph Robidoux's old trading post, and becoming a Union officer, "provost marshal," and postmaster there.
