He was born in Indiana in 1856 and became a railroad conductor from 1884 to 1894 "on the Wabash road, between St. Louis and Kansas City," meeting again in Kansas City in the 1900 Republican National Convention at Convention Hall as nominee for governor, while based in Saint Louis.
