Robert Gaston Elliott came to Lawrence, Kansas Territory in 1854 and established the Kansas Free State newspaper which was opposed to the introduction of slavery into the territory. He was born in Union County, Indiana on July 23, 1828 and died July 17, 1917 in Lawrence, Kansas. His letters printed in this article were written by him to his sister Mary Jane Elliott and to his fiance, Hattie Anderson. They were written in 1857, 1858, 1860, 1863, 1865, and 1866 and provide a good description of the situation in the area at the time. Article includes Elliott's picture as well as his wife Hattie.
