South Park Elementary School in Merriam, Kansas, closed May 29, 2007.It will merge with Merriam Elementary at the new Merriam Park Elementary School. South Park was central in the late 1940s civil rights struggle before Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education. The case was pursued by African American parents who were not allowed to send their children to the new South Park Elementary but rather the children were forced to attend Walker School which was not in good condition. When the parents refused to send their children to Walker, Corinthian Nutter and Hazel McCray-Weddington taught them in parent's homes. "On June 11, 1949, the Kansas Supreme Court upheld a state law that prohibited segregation based on race in communities with populations of less than 15,000." Black students could begin to attend South Park on September 12, 1949. Includes a timeline history of South Park Elementary School.
