Profile of the French-immersion school Academie Lafayette, described as an "urban success story" due to the high standardized test scores of its students. The school was established in 1999 as a public charter school sponsored by the University of Central Missouri. In 2009, it became the first charter school in Missouri to receive the Department of Education's Gold Star Award. Academie Lafayette currently operates two campuses, at 3421 Cherry St. and 6903 Oak St., and is negotiating with Kansas City Public Schools to created a hybrid district-charter high school.
