Navigation of the Upper Missouri
-
Description
-
Extract taken from an "exchange paper" giving the account of the voyage of the steamboat "El Paso" up the Missouri River to the mouth of the Milk River. The "El Paso" left St. Louis on May 6, 1850, and made the trip up and back in 56 days. "We passed the point where the steamer Assineboin had wintered some years ago--the highest point ever before or since attained by steamboats. The Assineboin, it is remembered, was frozen, and before the end of winter entirely broken up." The article states that the Milk River "is 'right away in the Indian country,' three hundred and fifty miles, more or less, above the mouth of the Yellow Stone river...."
