Article describes a school district map showing segregated school boundary lines of Kansas City Public Schools. Maurice Smith, son of the teacher who originally owned the map, recognized its historical significance and donated it to the school district. The map illustrates how the city was divided between white and black school districts before the mid 1950s. The city integrated its schools in the 1955-1956 academic year.

This collection consists of an enrollment book for Faxon School covering the school years 1906-07 through 1912-13. The book lists the following information for each student in 1st through 7th grades: name; age (in years and months); date of admission; previous school; grade; class; name of parent or guardian; occupation of parent or guardian; residence; birthplace of student; if and when they left during the school year; for what reason they left; number of days belonged, attended, absent, and tardy for each term and for the entire school year. For some years, teachers' names, students' vaccination status, or parent/guardian birthplace is listed.

Photos and article about segregated education in later 19th century Kansas. Well-documented essay exploring "the grass-roots attitudes toward the schooling of black Americans in Kansas, a Great Plains state which throughout the 19th century prided itself as a political entity dedicated to the principles of freedom and justice." Examines the changing situations pertaining to the "race problem" as more African Americans entered the state after the Civil War and attitudes hardened toward because of "racial prejudice" (page 264) related to providing equal and integrated education to blacks and whites. Portrays various sides of the sitation, from legislators views to those of the press, "[o]rganized black public opinion" (page 260), and others.
