James A. Hazlett was born in Kansas City on May 26, 1917, and died in the same city on September 14, 1997. He was employed by the Kansas City Missouri School District for many years as a teacher, principal, director of research, and finally as superintendent of schools from 1955-1969. The Hazlett papers include his personal files for the years 1929-1997 and consist of a variety of materials such as manuscripts, photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, papers and speeches, correspondence, reports and testimonies, academic degree work, tape recordings, books, and various personal and ephemeral items. These papers include information pertinent to the study of the local educational community and the Kansas City School District, in particular the early history of desegregation efforts in the school system.

The D. M. Nigro Collection consists of publicity materials, correspondence, ephemera, and photographs created by or relating to Dr. D. M. Nigro of Kansas City. Nigro was a medical doctor, sports enthusiast, world traveler, photographer, and an active member of the Democratic Party and the Italian-American community. The collection includes approximately 500 photographs.

SC20 Guadalupe Center Collection Finding Aid

Established in 1919, the Guadalupe Center originally served as a settlement house and gathering place for the growing community of Mexican immigrants residing on the West Side of Kansas City. The center offered a variety of programs, including medical clinics, classes, music and dance groups, sports teams, and social clubs. The Guadalupe Center Collection contains scrapbooks, photographs, programs, histories, and records that document an early period of the organization’s activities.
