He had earlier in 1915 become the first African American to serve as superintendent of Old City Hospital for black patients. Biographical sketch of Dr. William Thompkins, a black Kansas City physician and former "recorder of deeds for the district of Columbia [Washington, D. C.]." Born about 1885 in Jefferson City, Missouri and coming to Kansas City in 1906 and becoming "the first superintendent of General Hospital No. 2 of Kansas City" in 1915.
