Title: Bookin' West: Tall Tales and "Books of Every Sort and Size From Fanny Hill to The Bible on The Journey West
Description: This bibliographic essay examines the books widely read in the nineteenth century that had an influence on pioneers. It includes extracts from various journals and letters of pioneers that mention the books they took on their overland journeys. The books most included on the journey were the family Bible, anything written by Shakespeare, Webster's dictionary, guidebooks, and children's readers, etc. "During their journey westward, emigrants and adventurers brought, bought, borrowed, traded, cast off, or picked up books whenever it suited. Perhaps their greatest legacy was to leave behind their own writings--diaries, journals, letters, and reminiscences--which continue to fuel twenty-first-century imaginations with epic stories of heroes, romance, and adventure."

Title: John Johnson Material
Description: This folder of material includes newspaper clippings which include Johnson's obituary, typescripts of 11 letters dated 1853-1875, family record pages from a family Bible, photocopies of photographs of John and Diana Johnson as well as Emily and Holly Jarboe, and a photocopied will of Peter Hoagland. The letters were written from Kansas and Kansas City, Mo., by John L. Johnson or family members. Mention is made of the national political situation of the time, the border warfare difficulties experienced in Kansas and Missouri and early situations in Kansas City.

Description: In 1908, the Central Presbyterian Church of Kansas City established a settlement house to assist Italian immigrants in the community. Commonly known as the Italian Mission, the initiative grew to offer a kindergarten, free health clinic, recreation center, dual-language publications, and a church to the Italian community and other residents living in Kansas City’s Northeast neighborhood. This collection includes the operational and financial records of the mission and related projects, as well as personal papers of its long-time leader, Dr. John B. Bisceglia, and his family.
