The building was designed by Shepard & Wiser and built in 1923. It was demolished in early 1998 and the site used for a parking lot. St. Paul's Episcopal Church stands to the south, across 40th Street.

Recycled Sounds, The Futon Company, and Metcalfe Key are among the ground-floor tenants, with Harling's Upstairs Bar and Grill occupying the second floor.

The Montrose Apartments were demolished in early 1998 and the site was used for a parking lot.

Photograph of the 45th Street-facing entry of the Nelson Art Gallery in the early 1980s. A visitor parking can be seen in front of the building, with a low stone wall between the lot and 45th Street. The museum opened in 1933, and underwent a major redesign of its grounds in the late 1980s to create the Henry Moore Sculpture Garden, which was later expanded further and renamed the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park.

Photograph of the east side of the 4500 block of Main Street in the late 1970s. The Hilton Plaza Inn, at 45th & Main, stands at the left edge of the image. The Grandview Apartments, at 4535 Main, and the Alameda Vista Apartments, at 4537-41 Main, stand to the south. A portion of the Ponce De Leon Apartments, at 4555 Main, is visible at the right edge of the photograph. With the exception of the Sevilla Plaza building at 4545 Main, all the apartment buildings between the hotel and Ponce de Leon building were later demolished to create parking lots for adjacent hotels and apartments.

Photograph of Westport Junior High School, foreground, and Westport High School, background, on 39th Street circa 1980. The high school was built in 1908, and the middle school was built in 1924 as a junior high school, and served as Kansas City Junior College from 1942 to 1969, and then a temporary location for Manual High School from 1969 to 1977, then returned to use as a junior high, and later middle, school. Both school buildings were closed by the Kansas City School District in 2010, and sold to private developers in 2014.
