The Hilton Plaza Inn, at 1 West 45th, occupies the bottom left corner of the image, and numerous residential buildings are pictured lining 47th Street. Streetcar tracks can be seen running behind commercial buildings in the foreground, south diagonally across Main Street, before running alongside Brookside Boulevard south of Brush Creek. Main Street and Brookside Boulevard were later realigned as part of a Brush Creek beautification and flood control project in the 1990s.

Beloved Southmoreland Park Tree Is Cut Down

The flowering catalpa tree that once stood at the park's southernmost point has been removed because it had become a safety hazard. It stood where Oak Street, Warwick and Cleaver Boulevards come together. No one knew the exact age of the tree which was cut down on June 28, 2004.

Historic Building Spared From Demolition

The apartment building at 43rd and Walnut streets has become the Southmoreland Condos building. The brick building was built in 1924 and was to be demolished at the end of 1999. Through the efforts of the Southmoreland neighborhood association, the building was donated to local developer Westside Housing Organization. Also involved was QuickTrip Co. who gave up tearing the building down to build a QuickTrip convenience store. Includes photograph of the building exterior.
