Armour Eckrich Branded Meats, a unit of John Morrell & Co., a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods Inc. of Smithfield, VA, will close its facility August 31, 2007. About 280 workers will lose their jobs. Smithfield Foods acquired the Kansas City, Kansas, plant in October when it bought ConAgra Foods Inc.'s refrigerated meats unit for $571 million in cash.
