Fat Lady Sings For Former Opera House
-
Description
-
One of the oldest buildings downtown, the former Grand Opera House at 700 Walnut is slated for demolition. The building was built in 1891 by Melville Hudson and Abraham Judah. Since 1926 it has been used as a parking garage. The property is owned by Tower Properties, the real estate affiliate of Commerce Banchares Inc. The building is not protected by local or federal historic status and apparently no efforts will be made to preserve it.
