Bishop Edward Welles, Episcopal Leader, Dies
-
Description
-
Undated newspaper obituary for Episcopal Bishop Edward Welles, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri. The article appears to have been clipped from the Kansas City Star or Times. He was 83 at the time of death. "Bishop Welles was a prominent force in the area's religious scene from 1950 until his retirement in 1972." He was interested in ecumenical relations and developed a close relationship between the Episcopal and Catholic communities. He was an early proponent of women's ordination to the priesthood and ordained his daughter, Katrina Swanson.
