Sedalia 150 Years to Celebrate
-
Description
-
Article about the history of Sedalia and events to be held during the year-long celebration for its 150 anniversary. General George R. Smith founded the city in 1860 and planned to call it Sedville using his daughter Sarah's nickname Sed. He was encouraged, though, to change "ville" to "alia," from the Latin word "alias," and thus it became Sedalia. "The new town prospered, becoming the terminus for the Pacific Railroad and a vital strong point during the Civil War." The Missouri State Fair is and has been held in Sedalia since 1899.
