Ice Harvesting was Big Business in Late 1800s
-
Description
-
Article describes the early ice industry in the Kansas City area including the local companies who were in business in the late 1800s. One of the early entrepreneurs in the ice business was James Yates who founded the Yates Ice Company and built large ice houses at Bean Lake in northwest Platte County. The dangerous work of harvesting the ice was frequently performed by immigrant workers. Many local farmers also harvested their own ice by damming creeks on their property. A sidebar article is also featured titled "Short History of Bean Lake."
