The History of the Herschede Hall Clock Company
-
Description
-
History of the Herschede Hall Clock Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The origin of the Kansas City Power and Light Building replica clock on display in the Central Library is described on page 46: "From time to time, the Herschede company was commissioned to design and build clocks to commemorate special occasions. One of the most elaborate of these orders was received during the depths of the depression in 1933. A new high-rise office building promoted by a civic-minded group in Kansas City as a means of stimulating construction activity, was erected to serve as the headquarters of the Kansas City Power and Light Company. On completion, it was decided to make a present to the man who had conceived the project. A special floor clock was ordered with the case a replica of the building itself. Over six feet in height and accurate in every detail, the replica was made in the Herschede cabinet shop and fitted with a special electric movement. It made a fitting tribute to the man who had conceived the project and is still keeping correct time in the office of the building management today."
