Costs Mount as River Erodes
-
Description
-
Missouri River channel erosion is causing problems with the water supply for the metro area. "A levee and a wharf area in Kansas City, Kan., are among the places where the river is making channel cuts that make engineers nervous..." From the Parkville area through Kansas City the river has dropped 10 feet or more since World War II. Water levels have been barely above the intakes used to get the water for the area's use. The current drought period in this area and farther north has not helped the situation. Johnson County Water District No. 1 is building a weir or low dam on the Kansas River.
