A Mission Teacher's Letter
-
Description
-
One of six articles about the Methodist Shawnee Mission, this is a verbatim transcription of a letter written on May 6, 1850, by a teacher at the Indian Manual Laboring School that was part of the Shawnee Indian Mission. The letter had once been in the possession of Mrs. W. S. Woods, wife of William Stone Woods, or William Woods, as a longtime banker "with the South-West National Bank of Commerce." In addition to describing the mission and Indians, the author makes mention of Reverend Tyson Dines, "the preacher in charge" and Elder Hurlburt, who also lived at the mission. "Preacher Johnson" was the superintendent. The letter was addressed to "Mistress Julia Anne McBride, c/o of Judge E. W. McBride, Paris, Monroe County, Mo."
