This is evident in the numbers alone. As of the mid 1930s the state of Kansas had spawned a total of 4638 newspapers, at least one thousand more than any other state." The earliest publication in the state was a religious periodical printed in the Shawnee Indian language by missionary Jotham Meeker. The first issue of "Siwonowe Kesibwi" ("The Shawnee Sun") came off the press in February 1835.
