Tentative Financing in Line for Tornado-Monument Plan

"The developer of a proposed 650-foot Edwardsville tornado monument has submitted plans that include a tentative commitment from A. G. Edwards & Sons Inc. to underwrite $40 million of the project." The monument would be on 105 acres south of the Kansas Speedway and Interstate 70. "Plans call for building a tower that would be constructed of reinforced concrete with steel wrapped around it to give it the look of a funnel. The tower would have three levels of observation decks, one of which would feature a restaurant. The development would also feature a 25-acre working farm with a petting zoo and an education center, 100,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space, and a weather station." Visit the Oldest Home in Kansas

The Rookery building, located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, was built between 1828 and 1832 and is considered the oldest residence in Kansas. The building "housed the post's soldiers and officers, including Andrew Reeder, the first territorial governor of Kansas, William Clark's stepdaughter and a young lieutenant by the name of Douglas MacArthur, who lived there with his mother." The Rookery is just one of 269 homes at the fort listed on the National Register of Historic Places and one of 66 others that are part of a $3 million preservation project. The home is still lived in but will be open to the public to tour during this week.

Mall Condemnation Can Proceed

A bankruptcy judge ruled that Wyandotte County's Unified Government could continue its efforts to condemn the Indian Springs Mall at 4601 State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. The mall's owners had ten years to improve the property, but failed to do so. The Unified Government wants to develop a 100-acre mixed-use development on the property.

Wyandotte Countians Back Casino and Slots

By majorities of 81% and 82%, Wyandotte County voters overwhelmingly approved gambling measures that would allow for a state-owned casino in Wyandotte County and the installation of slot machines at The Woodlands racetrack. The county plans to move forward with the $300 million casino resort project which is expected to open by 2010 and create over 2,000 jobs.

Its former home was the abandoned Troy's Woodside Presbyterian Church in New York state. It will be the oldest mechanical-action pipe organ in the Kansas City area.

"In the mid-1800s, the Quindaro Ruins site was an abolitionist community in Kansas that thrived near the Missouri River. The former city of Qindaro helped establish Kansas as a free state and was a stop on the Underground Railroad."
