These records include office correspondence, newspaper clippings, annual reports, photographs, architectural drawings, and other miscellaneous items and are divided into 10 series groups. These groups include: Series I-Reports; Series II-Office Files; Series III-MVSC files; Series IV-Photographs; Series V-Staff Association Records, 1916-74; Series VI-Children's Department Records; Series VII-Scrapbooks; Series VIII-Specifications and Inventories (Building, Equipment, and Furniture); Series IX-Architectural and Engineering Drawings, Main Library and 9th and Locust location; and Series X-Artifacts. The majority of the office records are for the transitional years between the library's location on Locust Street and the move to the new building on 12th Street. Richard Sealock was the library director for most of this time period. Found in SC 6-1 are library records for ca1976-to date.

Series groups with-in this collection include the following: Series 1 - Public Services; Series 2 - Administration; Series 3 - Human Resources; Series 4 - Marketing; Series 5 - Photographs; Series 6 - Special Collections; Series 7 - Special Events. Although dates overlap between SC6 and SC6-1, the bulk of this collection includes the 1980s forward and covers a part of Library Director Harold Jenkins years and the directorship of Dan Bradbury (1983-2002). Sources contained within this collection include reports, correspondence, photographs, minutes, newspaper clippings, publicity items, documents, annual reports, and various other types of material. The collection is designed to be added to as materials come into Special Collections in the near future. Earlier Library Records may be found in SC 6.

The collection is comprised of 97 audiocassettes containing interviews of 56 people, largely from Kansas City's African American community. Subjects interviewed primarily include political, business, religious, and community leaders. The interviews center on the history of the African American community in the Kansas City metropolitan area and focus on the individual's role in and perception of that history. The collection also includes the paperwork that accompanied the project, such as interviewer evaluations and contracts for both staff and interviewees.

Pursuit of Truth: From Kansas City's Libraries, Alvin Sykes Plotted and Unlikely Course to Civil Rights History

Booklet published by the Kansas City Public Library summarizing the community, civil rights, and legal activism of Alvin Sykes. The text covers Sykes' early life and passion for self-education through public libraries. His involvement in the 1980 murder case of jazz musician Steve Harvey at the Liberty Memorial is highlighted. Sykes' pursuit of a federal civil rights violation case against Harvey's accused killer, Raymond Bledsoe, after he was declared not guilty by an all white jury in Jackson County court is covered. Sykes' civil rights and legal activism following Bledsoe's conviction in 1983, including his involvement with the reexamination of the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, is also covered. The booklet contains an introduction by former Kansas City Public Library executive director R. Crosby Kemper III and concludes with a note from Sykes discussing his life's work.
