Frank James or Henry Clements
-
Description
-
Charcoal portrait drawing of one of the guerrillas signed by the artist. Below the artist's name, handwritten in black ink is "Henry Clements (?)" and below that in different handwriting in blue ink is "F. James (?)," likely meaning Frank James. Who attempted to identify the portrait is unknown. Previous descriptions of this image indicated it was more likely of Frank James rather than Henry Clements, citing the 1860 census listing Henry Clements as the 5 year-old brother of Archie Clements. It was initially believed Henry Clements would have been too young to fight with Quantrill. However, in the Clements Family genealogy, "Clements Family Records: John Clements, Revolutionary Patriot" by Helen Clements, there is a Henry Clements who may have served as a Missouri guerilla during the Civil War. He was born in 1822 and died in 1900. It's possible that Henry Clements may be featured in the portrait.
