The white building most clearly visible is a small guesthouse on the grounds of the house to the left in the photo, 5410 Northeast Oak Ridge Drive, which was originally built around a log cabin in 1829 by James Compton. A Compton family member lived in the home until 1954, when it was sold to Louise Sandstrom who converted it into a restaurant. It opened in 1983 as Stroud's North, Oak Ridge Manor Restaurant ; Bar. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1980 as the Dr. James Compton Residence.

Further south, in the right side of the photo, is Ms. Ade's Beauty Salon at 3915 Broadway Boulevard. This block of buildings was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as part of the Ambassador Hotel Historic District and then, added to the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Standing to its west, at the left of the photo, is the Chouteau-Bridger Building at 504 Westport Road, with Stanford and Sons restaurant and comedy club as its tenant. Both buildings were built circa 1850 and are among the oldest buildings in Kansas City.

The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1980 as the Dr. James Compton Residence.

Virgil's opened in the building, which spans from 1712-26 W. 39th, in 1944, and remained until the building was destroyed by fire on November 7, 1990. The building was replaced by a one-story commercial strip and parking lot.
