The First National Bank of Kansas City was started in 1886 by James Lewis Lombard and Colonel James L. Abernathy, and served Kansas City for over 100 years. The First National Safe Deposit Company was a subsidiary of the bank that offered safe deposit boxes for customer use. This collection contains items found in the former First National Bank and current Kansas City Public Library Central Branch building by library staff, as well as additional miscellaneous bank materials donated to the library.

Advertising card for Spalding's Commercial College that is folded and cut to mimic a bank booklet with money sticking out. Front cover has picture of Capital building and says:"No. 42602, Capital Savings Bank, In account with, Spalding's Commercial College." Small type at bottom says:"Patent applied for" and "Clark Lith. Co., Chicago." Inside has picture of check for $1 and says:"Twenty-fifth annual Day School, in session all the year." and "Twenty-fifth annual Night School, in session Oct. 1 to April 1." Also: "Estab. Oct. 25, 1865. Incor. July 11, 1867. All English and Commercial Branches, Phonography, Type-Writing, Modern Languages, etc., practically taught at lowest rates. Unrivalled Course of Instruction. Large Faculty of sixteen experienced Teachers and Lecturers. Ten elegant College Rooms. Unsurpassed advantages. Best moral influences. Good Government."
