Signs advertize the House of Chun Chinese restaurant and the adjacent Kon Tiki Room tiki bar, and a section of the Warner Plaza apartments are visible at the left of the image. A twin building stood across Warner Plaza to the north. The area, south of Linwood Boulevard to 34th Street, between Main and Gillham, was deemed blighted and ridden with crime in drugs in the late 1980s, and these buildings, as well as other homes, apartments, and commercial buildings, were demolished in the early and mid-'90s as part of the so-called "Glover Plan" to be replaced by the Midtown Marketplace development, a large commercial development anchored by big box retailers Home Depot and Costco.

Hyde Park Building

Photograph of the Main Street-facing side of the Hyde Park Building, at 3841-49 Main, circa 1980. The image shows the building with damaged windows on its second story, and boarded-up storefronts and damaged terra cotta tiles on the ground level. The building was owned at the time by Kansas City's Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority and was in the process of evicting adult bookstores and bars in an effort to bring new businesses to the area in hopes of stablizing the neighborhood economically. The city provided funds to assist in renovating the buildings, and the project was complete by the end of 1983. The second floor housed medical offices, and the ground floor included a pharmacy, dentist's office, and other businesses. The neighboring Netherlands Hotel/Hawthorne Plaza apartment building and Walnut Street Shops were also a part of the redevelopment effort.

Southwell Building

Photograph of the Southwell Building at the intersection of Main Street and Westport Road, in the late 1970s. The building was designed by architects McKecknie and Trask and opened in 1929. A real estate sign hangs in the window of the storefront at 3935 Main, which was recently occupied by Howard E. Thruman Institutional Church, and a door to the second-floor Harling's Upstairs Bar and Grill can be seen at the right of the image. Moten's Shoe Repair occupies the neighboring building to the north.

Photograph, looking southwest, of the west side of the 4500 block of Main Street circa 1980. Spanish-style apartment buildings, at 4502 and 4506 Main Street, can be seen on the west side of the street, and were later demolished for the construction of the Fountain View (later American Century) office towers. The Sulgrave and Regency highrise apartment towers, located on 48th Street, are visible in the background of the image.
