The company was founded in 1856 in Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1878, it moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and eventually came to occupy more than 300,000 square feet at 1501-1525 West 9th Street and 908-910 Liberty Street. Eight buildings were involved. The business of the furniture company was acquired in March 1950 by the United Industrial Syndicate, Inc., of New York, including a manufacturing plant in Leavenworth. In June 1950 Davidson's Furniture Company acquired the home furnishing inventory of the Abernathy Company. In July 1950 a Kansas City investment group acquired ownership of the buildings on 9th Street and Liberty Street.

Funeral rites notice for James Logan Abernathy, former vice-president of the Abernathy Furniture Company in Leavenworth and Kansas City, dying on March 24, 1962, of an apparent suicide. "Mr. Abernathy was born in Leavenworth. He was the son of the late Omar Abernathy and a grandson of the late James L. Abernathy. The latter was the founder of the furniture firm." He left his wife Dolores and three daughters.

Short obituary for William Abernathy, son of Colonel James Abernathy. William was secretary of the Abernathy Furniture Company of Kansas City and Leavenworth, Kansas. He retired in 1904 due to poor health. At the time of his death, he was in New York City. He was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on June 5, 1860, and was married to Fannie E. McClellan. During the Spanish American War he was commissioned a major of the Fifth Missouri regiment and served in Puerto Rico.
