The KC library has some old photos of landmarks that demonstrate a unique photo process using potato starch. These autochrome photos were taken by Frank Lauder and were used in giving talks to primarily garden clubs in the area.

The collection consists of 1402 color, glass negative autochrome images of Kansas City residences and gardens; some city views, including parks, statues, fountains, and other landmarks; and pictures of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Topeka, Kansas. The photos date from around 1930 through 1942, with the bulk taken before 1935. A large portion of the images are close-ups of individual plants and flowers. The collection also includes a few color slides that are not autochromes, as well as a handful of black-and-white slides. Of the total number of slides, 1228 are unique images. The collection also includes notes from lectures given by the photographer.

Author highlights the Kansas City Public Library's collection of Frank Lauder's color slides which they obtained in 1953. Some biographical information about Lauder is included as well as information about the authochorme process. Lauder would give presentations at garden and women's clubs, as well as places like the Chicago Art Institute during the 1930s and '40s. Most of the slides in the Library's collection are of Kansas City homes and gardens.
