The owner of the El Torreon building located at 3101 Gillham Plaza has decided to stop the all-ages live music venue shows that were being held there. The 32,000-square-foot building with a historic second-floor ballroom was built in 1927. It was a jazz haven early on, a roller rink from 1938-1970, and the Cowtown Ballroom from 1970 to 1974. The owner Abe Haddad has also been trying to sell the building.

Feature article about the Cowtown Ballroom, located in the former El Torreon ballroom at 3109 Gillham Road in Kansas City, Missouri. The Cowtown Ballroom opened July 1971 and closed Sept. 16, 1974. It featured rock and folk music of the day. It had a logo of a cow's head smoking a joint. Joe Heyen is currently making a documentary film about the venue. The main founders were Stan Plesser, Dan "Mort" Moriarty, and the Peterson brothers. Includes numerous photographs, some of former performers who played at the Cowtown Ballroom like comedian Steve Martin.

Stan Plesser Area Music Promoter, Dies at 79

Kansas City concert promoter Stan Plesser passed away on Sept. 1 at the age of 79. Plesser operated music venues such as the Vanguard Coffee House and Cowtown Ballroom in the 1960s and '70s. He also co-founded Good Karma Productions and booked acts into larger venues such the Music Hall and Arrowhead Stadium.
