He was born in Palmyra, Missouri in 1863 and moved to Excelsior Springs with his mother in 1889 before graduating as valedictorian from Western University in 1897. He then became a teacher in Excelsior Springs and then principal at Lincoln High School while also speaking at Republican political conventions around the state. Later he bought his own farm and began hat-checking at the Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs.
