"As a young redhead, Richard served as the original poster child for Cook's Paint and Varnish." During his business career he was president of Rogers and Smith Advertising Agency and vice president of the First National Bank of Kansas City. He was also involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors.

The library is one of 16 winners.
