Missouri Loses a True Forest Pioneer
-
Description
-
Article reports on the passing of Leo A. Drey (98), an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. Drey began purchasing forest land in Shannon and Reynolds counties in the 1950s which had been depleted due to "cut-and-run" logging practices of the early 20th century. Those purchases and others led to Drey being the largest private landowner in the state, and also the creation of Pioneer Forest, consisting of 160,000 acres of protected woodlands. Pioneer Forest is currently managed by the L-A-D (Leo A. Drey) Foundation and open to the public for recreational use.
