One page about the second legal mayor of the city, John Johnson (1816-1903), trained as an architect in England and becoming designer of the Broadway Hotel, later called the Coates House, in 1857 at 10th and Broadway Boulevards. Description of Johnson's life and career, a native of England coming to Kansas City in 1852 and serving as its second mayor for about a month in 1855, then going "into the real estate busines, platting several additions," with residence at 5th and Delaware Avenues. Also "the first professional architect in the city," associated with Asa Cross, and possibly the designer of "the first city hall at 4th and Main Streets, a two-story brick building which had the police department and jail on the first floor."
