Henry "McDougal, practicing in Daviess County, northeast of Kansas City, appears to have prosecuted the only successful lawsuit against [Jesse] James, obtaining a judgment, collecting--and living to tell about it. Barely." Local lawyer Jim Muehlberger has discovered documents that detail this litagation. The case involved the loss of a man's horse during a robbery attempt by the James brothers. Henry McDougal represented the case and in January of 1870 filed a lawsuit against the brothers seeking retribution for the loss of horse and gear. For representing his client, he was shot at at least twice and survived, later moving to Kansas City and becoming president of the Kansas City and Missouri bar associations. McDougal, also with Frank Sebree, founded the Kansas City law firm of Shook Hardy and Bacon.

Elisha Scott was a prominent African American lawyer from Topeka, Kansas who dedicated his career to fighting racial injustice. Known as �??a passionate advocate for his clients,�?� Scott made a name for himself defending African Americans from racially-motivated criminal accusations in courtrooms around the country. He worked closely with the NAACP and argued school segregation lawsuits in Coffeyville, Baxter Springs, Topeka, and Merriam, Kansas, as well as Kansas City, Missouri. His work helped lay the legal ground for the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case, in which he also participated.

Article on the obscenity trial of Henry J. Haldeman. Haldeman�??s father, Emauneul Haldeman-Julius, ran a successful mail order publishing company out of Girard, Kansas between 1919 and 1945, printing Little Blue Books of classic literature, as well as political and social theories and commentaries. Haldeman took over the company from his father in the 1950s, but soon ran afoul of government censors for printing books on sexuality and sending them through the mail. Haldeman asserted his First Amendment rights, fought the charges, and eventually won, but went bankrupt in the process.
