Postcard photo: "Westport United Methodist Church at West 40th and Washington was the first Protestant church to be organized in the Kansas City and Independence area. The church's 150th anniversary is October 24-26, 1986. The church was formally organized in 1836 in the house of William Miles Chick by Reverend James Porter. By 1853 the Methodists decided to build their own church. Under the direction of Nathan Scarritt, the pastor, the lot at 40th and Washington was purchased for $500."

Biographical information about James Porter (1786-1851), organizer of the first Methodist church in Kansas City in the 1830s. Arriving in Jackson County in 1829 from Nashville with his mother Elizabeth Porter and coming to Kansas City about 1833-1834, building five log homes at about 26th Street and Porter Avenue or Tracy Avenue with slave cabins, including his own residence (pictured) demolished in 1913.

Illustrated map and biographical article about Reverend James Porter (1786-1851), a pioneer Methodist minister arriving in Jackson County from Tennessee with his mother in 1829 before settling in Kansas City in 1833-1834 with "his wife, Mrs. Jane Thomas Porter [or Jane Porter], and a party large enough to form a little colony in the wilderness of Western Missouri of that day." Buyer of "365 acres for his plantation" of land between 31st and 23rd Streets, the Paseo and Locust Streets "from William Baxter and David Burge," building his home at the northeast corner of 28th and Tracy Avenues with nearby barn and slave cabins and "burial ground of the Porter family" on the "present site of the Troost Avenue Methodist church, 2534 Troost avenue."
