Biographical information about James Porter (1786-1851), organizer of the first Methodist church in Kansas City in the 1830s. Arriving in Jackson County in 1829 from Nashville with his mother Elizabeth Porter and coming to Kansas City about 1833-1834, building five log homes at about 26th Street and Porter Avenue or Tracy Avenue with slave cabins, including his own residence (pictured) demolished in 1913.
