This collection of 49 boxes is arranged by imprint and state: Missouri, Kansas, and outside the local area and then by city, with the two largest groupings for Kansas City and St. Louis. Within the Kansas City arrangement is a separate category for Jenkins Music Company and for Charles Johnson. Local composers besides Charles Johnson include Scott Joplin, Carl Hoffman, Charles N. Daniels, and others. The type of music includes traditional music of the time period with emphasis on ragtime selections. The bulk of the music is published but there are some original, handwritten compositions. Also included are songs about Kansas City as well as sheet music covers with illustrations depicting Kansas City.

In the department's sheet music collection (SC59) can be found a song titled "I Love You!" from L. Lawrence Weber's musical farce called "Little Jessie James" which was a female parody of outlaw Jesse James. A New York City apartment is the setting for the play. The book and lyrics are by Harlan Thompson, music by Harry Archer, and it was staged by Walter Brooks. The lyrics are also in French and the copyright date for the song is 1923. The show opened August 15, 1923, at the Longacre Theater in New York City and closed about a year later.

Located in the department's sheet music collection (SC59) is a piece of sheet music entitled "America is Proud of You" which is a march song dedicated to the American Legion and introduced by the Arthur Maloney Post, No. 93, at the National Convention of the American Legion held in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 31 - November 2, 1921. The words and music are by Art J. Hiller. The cover of the sheet music includes a soldier and a sailor shaking hands in front of Uncle Sam. Inside of the sheet music cover can be found the American Legion preamble.
