Biographical sketch of Avis Smith (1851-1941), "the first female physician qualified to practice in Jackson County." Native of Illinois coming to Kansas City about 1880 with offices in the Commercial Building as an obstetrician-gynecologist before moving to the G. Y. Smith Building at 11th and Main Streets and opening "the Women's and Children's Hospital" in 1897 at 15th and Cleveland Avenues (moved in 1899 to 11th and Troost Avenues).
