The Kansas City Star newspaper company was founded in 1880 by William Rockhill Nelson and Samuel Morss. Nelson and his family went on to retain ownership of the company until their deaths in 1926 when ownership was bought by employees of the newspaper. Local stockholders owned the newspaper until 1977 when it was sold to corporate ownership. This collection, made up of a portion of the company’s records, documents the history of the newspaper and its founding family.

The three were features writer James A. Fussell (first place in the general feature category for "One Who's Lived the Life Becomes Agent of Change," a story about Kristy Childs, founder of Veronica's Voice, a Kansas City organization that helps women leave prostitution); arts senior editor and writer Steve Paul (first place in best reader interactive category for "29-Second Film Festival"); and theater critic Robert Trussell (first place in the arts and entertainment feature category for "Drama of Hard Time").
