The card states that the murals were created by artist Edward Holslag. The mural shows a line of covered wagons preparing to cross a stream on the trail. The reverse side of the card reads: "Around the walls of the Savoy Grill are twelve famous murals by Edward Holslag illustrating the pioneers' hazardous trek along the Santa Fe Trail from Westport Landing to New Mexico. The author relates that, by using computerized mapping with 3-D modeling, aerial photography, and a field survey with GPS and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, he was able to discover a previously unnoticed mountain pass and route of travel that makes the final connection between the new southern route to Oregon and the old trail to California.

Article details Peter H. Burnett's travel from Oregon to California from September to November 1848 and his time in the gold mines during the Gold Rush with his brother-in-law, John P. Rogers, and his nephew, Horace Burnett. He details the route and traveling conditions, the plight of other traveling parties, what life was like at the mines. He meets a number of old acquaintances from Missouri in the mines including "Dr. John P. Long and his brother Willis." His descriptions of encounters with Indians are telling about immigrant attitudes and immigrant-Indian relations. He relays stories of the Donner Party heard from members of that family at the mines (William Foster and Mrs. Nye).
